At the time of the 1861 census George was living at Clarksons Land, Coatdyke, Old Monkland in the household of his widowed sister Janet Gilmour. He was unmarried, 20, an iron Miner born in Carfin. His brother Thomas, unmarried, 24 born Old Monkland was also living there.
