bullet  General Notes:

His first marriage was in Dungannon, Tyrone, Ireland. His second wife, Mary Jane also came from this area. He and Isabella emigrated to Scotland sometime between September 1870, when Francis was born and December 1872, when Thomas was born. His first marriage record in Ireland records the family surname as McCaul a common name in the local registers for the area. There is both a Civil record and a Church record. The latter is from the Dungannon Roman Catholic Church in the Parish of Drumglass. Thomas is recorded as a Labourer aged 22, residing in Dungannon and a bachelor. His father is recorded as Andrew McCaul, a farmer. Isabella shares the same surname, was aged 22, residing in Dungannon also, and a spinster. Her father was Peter McCaul, farmer. Witnesses were George Glin and Margaret Mcauify.

He must have emigrated to Scotland sometime between September 1870 and December 1872 as Francis was born in Tyrone and Thomas in Glasgow. I have not located him in the 1871 Census for Scotland so it is most likely he arrived after April 1871.

I have been unable to find a death record for his wife, Isabella but at the time of his marriage to Mary Jane in 1880 he is recorded as a widower. In the 1881 Census he was living at 18 North St, Barony, Glasgow with his new wife Mary Jane, 3 children from his previous marriage and their new child together, John. His name is recorded as McCall. Thomas was recorded as 33 years old, a General Labourer, birthplace Ireland. Mary Jane was aged 21, birthplace Ireland. The children were: Francis, aged 13, a Scholar born Ireland; Thomas, aged 7, a scholar born Glasgow, Peter, aged 4 born Glasgow; and John, aged 2 months born Glasgow.

At the time of the 1891 Census he was living at 68 Piccadilly St, Glasgow. The family surname is recorded as McColl. It is easy to imagine, with an Irish accent, McCaul/McCall being mistaken as McColl by the person recording the Census. He was 47 years old, a Stableman, born in Ireland. Living with him were his wife Mary Jane, aged 36 born in Ireland and daughter Maggie, aged 2, born in Glasgow.

I can find no record of the McCalls/McColls in the 1901 Census, although their children were born and died in Glasgow, and Mary Jane died in Glasgow in 1908.

On his Marriage record and son Thomas' Death record he made a cross as his "mark" suggesting he could not write.

His second wife Mary Jane died a widow, so he died before she did in 1908. He is not recorded as deceased on son Peter's second Marriage record in 1907 so he is assumed to have been alive then. However, I have been unable to find a death record for him in Scotland.
