bullet  General Notes:

A number of researchers record his parents as Joseph Bason and Martha Snelson. They were married in Astbury, Cheshire, some 130 miles away from Potterspury, in 1766. There was certainly a Joseph Bason living in Potterspury in 1806 as he is recorded in the Poll books there. Only property owners are recorded in these books so it is not an exhaustive list. However, it is more than a little surprising that the names Joseph and Martha do not feature in subsequent generations of this family.

There is also a record in the Grafton Estate records at the Northhants Record Office of the following:

"Feoffment of cottage or tenement at Potterspury 8 March 1776. William Bason the elder of Potterspury, mason to John Colvert of the same, taylor and Joseph Scrivener his trustee, with bond to indemnify against Dower 8 March 1776 2 seals, 2 signatures".

Grafton Regis is a town about 4 miles from Pottespury. Given that William Bason was a mason it is probable he was the father of John, and there is, in fact, a baptism record in 1763 for John born to parents William and Ann which seems to support this.

There is a record of a John Bason, Stone Mason, being a resident of the Yardley Gobion Workhouse at the time of the 1841 Census. Yardley Gobion is just near Potterspury (and Grafton Regis) in Northamptonshire. It is likely that this is our John Bason. This John Bason appears to have died on 2nd June 1843 in the Workhouse and was buried in Potterspury. As John's three sons, Thomas, John and Joshua were all Masons it is highly likely this John was the patriarch.

John married Ann Edwards **, daughter of William Edwards and Elizabeth Horton, on 21 Jun 1789 in Potterspury, Northampton, England. (Ann Edwards ** was born about Mar 1772 in Potterspury, Northampton, England, christened on 8 Mar 1772 in Potterspury, Northampton, England, died in 1830 in Potterspury, Northampton, England and was buried on 22 Jul 1830 in Potterspury, Northampton, England.)

bullet  Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were John Colvert and JM Robinson. John Colvert/Calvert is believed to have been married to John's possible Aunt (sister??), Anna or Hannah Bason. He may have been related to John Calvert, tailor.
