He was a Miner at the time of the 1871 Census, living with his mother and brother in Cambusnethlan, Lanark.

He is said to have emigrated to New Zealand (as did his brother) and then to Australia. There is a record of a George McNair arriving in Sydney in 1885 aboard the Bombay. He was aged 27 which would be a very good fit.
