James is recorded as from the parish of Bothwell on his marriage certificate. He was married in the Parish of Barony, Glasgow which is where his wife came from. Her name is recorded as JERVAY in that record.

He named one of his daughters Grizzal. There is also a record of a Grissal Hill being born to father John Hill in Bothwell and baptised 2nd November 1701. There may be a family connection here, given this is a relatively unusual name.
