At the time of the 1861 Census he was still an Ironstone miner living in Whitburn. He was aged 38. His wife was named as Isabella, aged 36 and their children were: Elisabeth 12, Helen 9, William 6 and John 2. The children were all born in Whitburn and all but John were scholars.
