bullet  General Notes:

The story of how George came to be in Australia, what became of him, and details of his descendants, is recounted in Craig's award-winning book - In the Shadow of Feathertop: a history of the Lives and legacy of George Jones and Margaret Hardie. Read about the book here: http://craig-fullerton.com/product/in-the-shadow-of-feathertop/

George was a Convict convicted of Burglary in the Southampton Assizes on 15th July 1835 and transported for Life. By the 18th September, 1835 George had been deposited in the Prison Hulk, Leviathan. The register for the Leviathan records that his crime was committed at Winchester suggesting, perhaps, that this was his home town. He left England on the 5 May 1836 on the Moffatt bound for Sydney. He received his Ticket of Leave on the 11th October 1844 allowing him to remain in the District of Camden. On the 3rd February 1845 this was altered to allow him to live in the District of Goulburn.

According to his Death Certificate, he had been in Victoria for 45 years at the time of his death suggesting he came there in 1836. This may have been simply to hide the fact he'd been a convict.
