He is recorded as having signed ip for the British Navy on 10 November 1854, Service no. 19520.

At the time of the 1861 Census he is aged 26, born Greenwich, Kent and working as a Labourer at a Boiler Maker. he is living at 5 Marlbourough St, Greenwich East. Living here also is his wife Louisa, 26, born London; and children Annie L, 21 months, and William G, 3 months, both born Greenwich.

At the time of the 1871 census he is recorded as George R Gouldthorpe, a carman, aged 35 born Greenwich. Living here also is his wife Louisa, 35, born London; children Hannah, 11, William, 10, George John, 5 all scholars born in Greenwich. Also living here was Arthur Chappell, a nephew, aged 16, a scholar born Greenwich.

At the time of the 1881 Census he is recorded as George R Gouldthorpe, aged 44, a Labourer born in Greenwich, Kent. He is living at 12 Raywhen Less (?), Edmonton, Middlesex. Living with him is his wife Louisa, 46, born North London and children: Hannah (actually believed to be Anna), 21, a servant born Greenwich; William G, 20, a Labourer born Greenwich; George J, 15, a bakers apprentice, born Greenwich; Louisa M., 9, a scholar born Greenwich; Richard, 8, born Greenwich; Ada, 4, Elizabeth, 2, and Frank 4 months, all born in Moor, Edmonton.

At the time of the 1891 Census he is recorded as George R Gouldthorpe, aged 55, a Confectionery Shop owner, born Greenwich. He is living at Enfield Wash, Enfield, Middlesex. His wife is recorded as Lucy rather than Louisa, 56, born Bermondsey, London. Some of his children appear to have had their names misrecorded too: Robert (Richard?!) aged 18, born Greenwich, single, no occupation; Lucy (Louisa?!), 19, single, no occupation born Greenwich; Ada, 14, a scholar born Edmonton; Frank, 11, a scholar born Edmonton; and a granddaughter Ellen Gouldthorpe,6, a scholar born Tottenham, Middlesex.

At the time of the 1901 Census he is living at Market Place, Enfield, Middlesex. He is 65 and a confectionery shopkeeper, an owner rather than a worker. Louisa is 66 and erroneously recorded as born in Greenwich. Living here also is daughter Elizabeth, 27, an Assistant in Store, born Edmonton and Mabel Looker, granddaughter, aged 5 born Ponders End, Middlesex.

At the time of the 1911 census t hey are living in Enfield, Middlesex. He is named as George Richard Gouldthorpe, age 75, an old age pensioner, born in Greenwich. Louisa is 76, also an old age pensioner, born Greenwich. They are recorded as having had 10 children of which 7 were still living.
