His birth record records his grandparents Archibald and Robina as his parents. But there are two subsequent corrections to this document. The first dated 29 Dec 1870 corrects the names of the parents - removing Archibald and Robina and designating Matthew as "illegitimate" born to Robina Bain [indescipherable]. Archibald, the Informant, is designated "Grandfather". The second correction was made 28 May 1984 and refers to "Matthew Bain - Decree of Paternity against Hugh Wilson 1872 April 18" and that "No reference to decree of paternity to be entered on any extract or certificate". So it appears that Hugh Wilson was named as the father.
