In 1907 he was the Treasurer of the Amalgamated Miners Association in Harrietville.
In November of 1915 he was working on the Harrietville Star Dredge when it sank. "There had been problems with rotting timbers for some time, and concrete lining had been applied inside the pontoon. The final accident happened at 9.30 p.m. on a Saturday night, when Ernie Hocking noticed that the stern line had gone slack. When he winched it up, the rope snagged a rotten plank and the dredge began to sink. All ernie could do then was blow the whistle while the ship went down." Lloyd
in 1926 he was working as an Engine Driver, one of three employed at the Rose Thistle and Shamrock mine.
His sister Margaret married the brother of the husband of his second wife Sarah Joynson (nee Price) and his cousin Florence Lawrence married another brother. So there were obviously close connections between the Hockings and the Joysons.
