General Notes: James and Grace arrived in Melbourne from Liverpool aboard the Greyhound in January 1859 as unassisted immigrants. James was a miner from Cornwall and Grace a dressmaker. She had been badly marked by smallpox. They spent a 18 months at Creswick where their first child Jack was born. They bought a horse and dray, a goat and provisions and headed towards the Ovens Valley. After 3 months on the road they reached New Rush (Harrietville) and took up land there. James built a slab and shingle hut which had an earth floor, shutters, unglazed windows and a large stone fireplace. He spent his time clearing and cultivating his land, and worked as a miner too. (Grace Clemens was born in 1839 in St Just In Penwith, Cornwall, England, died on 30 Oct 1909 in Harrietville, Victoria, Australia and was buried in Nov 1909 in Harrietville Cemetery, Harrietville, Victoria, Australia.) |
