At the time of the Census in 1841 William and Sarah were living in George's Court, Redruth, Cornwall and were recorded as 30 years old. Living with them were children William, 10, John 8, Samuel 7, Ezekiel, 4, Stephen 3 and Philip 2.

By 1851 they were living at Blight's Row, Redruth, Cornwall. Living here were William aged 43, Sarah aged 43, William, 23 Copper Miner, Henry 19 Copper Miner, John 17 Copper Miner, Samuel 16 Copper Miner, Ezekiel 14 Copper Miner, Stephen 13 Copper Miner, Phillip 12 Blacksmith, Frederick 10 at home, Richard 8 Scholar. All of the children were born in Redruth.

William and Sarah emigrated to South Australia on the Storm Cloud an iron ship of 907 tons, under the command of Capt. James Campbell. They departed Plymouth on the 12th February 1858 and arrived at Port Adelaide on the 28th April 1858. William was 47 years old and a Miner. Sarah was 49. Their young son, Richard, travelled with them, he was 14 years old. Also on board were their other sons, John and his family, and Samuel and his family; Frederick aged 15 and a Miner; Philip aged 17 and a Miner; and Stephen, aged 19 and a Miner. A grandchild, William Henry Hocking was born on board on the 30th April 1858 to their son John and his wife Elizabeth.

On arrival in SA William and Sarah lived at Kapunda and Moonta.

He is buried in Plot 184 at the Burra Cemetery.
