bullet  General Notes:

Joseph Haines, Sr. was born about 1727 in Germany and immigrated to New York about 1760. He had a lease from Sir Wm. Johnson for a tract of 100 acres of land in Tryon County at a cost of 6 pounds a year. There, he raised seven children until the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, when his three sons went to serve in the King's Royal Regiment of New York. One of his sons was killed. He later joined John Butler's Corp of Rangers along with two of his three remaining sons. He and his family fled to Quebec with the Butler's Rangers in 1781 and remained at Lachine for four years until they settled in the Niagara region. Joseph Haines and son-in-law, Peter Whitney, purchased a mill at the Four-Mile creek in 1801. It was deeded to his grandson, James Haines, son of Philip, in 1818 after Philip's death in a fire in York.
