A the time of the 1871 Census Francis is 51, born Deptford, Kent and working as a messenger at an iron works. He was living at 1 Morden Place, Lewisham Road, Greenwich St Alphage, Kent. Also living here was his wife Margaret, 59, born Woolwich, Kent and a Lodger, Charlotte Cavell aged 53, a Preparer of Tracing Paper.
