General Notes:
From the Goulburn Evening Penny Post Tue 29 Jul 1884 p. 4
There also died on the 17th, Mr. James Eldridge, a native of Picton, but for many years a resident of this district. The deceased was an old man, something about seventy years of age, and had been suffering for many years with asthma, which told very heavily on him in his old age, on account of the heavy cough attached to it. This disease seems to be more prevalent of late years than it used to be - as in former times it was rare to see one with it, as the old saying is, in a hundred; but now I believe it has one in every twenty in this district. I have heard that the poor man who has just gone to the other world had an attack of a very severe cold, which helped to send him to the grave. Asthma and a severe cold would try the youngest of our fellow countrymen to stand it, much more a man with one foot in the grave. The deceased was a very poor, inoffensive creature, with few friends, and that is an old proverb, money makes friends, and without that you are done, no one to look to you except for shame sake. The deceased was buried at the private burial ground, Phill's River. About twenty followed the funeral.
