bullet  General Notes:

He is a twin brother to Robert who also emigrated to the US. The brothers married sisters.

In the 1841 Census he is recorded at Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland living with his parents and siblings. The village appears to be Auchinlamin but I can't find any record of this place. John and his twin Robert are recorded as 10 years of age. Their father Hugh is a coalminer.

By the time of the 1851 Census the family was living at Shettleston, Glasgow. Hugh was 44, a coal miner, born Renfreshire, Abbey, Agnes was 44, born Lanark, Barony. Barony was an old area of suburban Glasgow on the north side. Daughters Helen and Margaret are not living with them by this time. Gilbert, John, Robert (both recorded as 18 years old) and Hugh are all working as coalminers. While William, and new children James and Agnes are Scholars, whilst baby Thomas is at home.
