At the time of the 1851 Census he was a 14 year old errand boy living with his parents and siblings at 3 York Buildings in Finsbury.

From 19 May 1863 until 29 Jan 1873 Richard was an inmate of the Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum. This institution was commonly used to house paupers and Richard's record shows that he was a pauper.

The 1881 Census shows he was a resident of the Distric Metropolitan Asylum in Watford, Hertfordshire. He was recorded as 55 years old, a sack maker born London.

In 1891 he was a patient at the Leavesden Asylum in Watford which is where he died a few years later. His occupation was described as retired painter.
