bullet  General Notes:

On her marriage certificate she is recorded as "in the Parish of Larbert & Dunipace" which is exactly where she was born.

At the time of the 1841 Census William and Janet are living in Newarthill, Lanarkshire. He is aged 30, a coal miner, born in the County. Janet is recorded as 25 (she was actually 34, an age discrepancy she carried forward until her death) and not born in the County. Their children are Thomas, 6, Alexander, 3 and James, 1. Daughters Marion and Janet are missing, perhaps deceased.

Interestingly they are living quite close to the families of Peter & Elisabeth Hardie and Alexander and Christian (nee Hardie) Tennant who are Craig's direct ancestors on a completely different line. They probably knew each other. Equally amazingly, Janet's second marriage to Samuel McCormick is recorded on the same page as the entry believed to be for Craig's GGG grandparents, George Jones & Margaret Hardie (surname incorrectly recorded as "Hannah", daughter of Peter).

At the time of the 1851 census Samuel and Janet are living on Hamilton Rd, Newarthill. Samuel is 28, a coal miner, born Ireland. Janet is recorded as 34, born Carronshore, Stirlinghsire. Their daughter together, Elizabeth, is 2, born Bothwell. Then there is Thomas Ritchie, step-son, 16, a coal miner, born Shotts; Alexander Ritchie, 13, a coal miner, born Bothwell; James Ritchie,11, a coal miner, born Bothwell; Janet Ritchie, 9, a scholar born Bothwell; and Euphemy, 7, a scholar, born Bothwell.
