At the time of the 1851 census Samuel and Janet are living on Hamilton Rd, Newarthill. Samuel is 28, a coal miner, born Ireland. Janet is recorded as 34, born Carronshore, Stirlinghsire. Their daughter together, Elizabeth, is 2, born Bothwell. Then there is Thomas Ritchie, step-son, 16, a coal miner, born Shotts; Alexander Ritchie, 13, a coal miner, born Bothwell; James Ritchie,11, a coal miner, born Bothwell; Janet Ritchie, 9, a scholar born Bothwell; and Euphemy, 7, a scholar, born Bothwell.

At the time of the 1871 census Samuel is a widower living in Chapelknowe, Lanarkshire, aged 47 and a Foreman at a coal pit. Living with him is daughter Jane, 18, unmarried, a housekeeper, born Bothwell, and grand-daughter Janet Gunn (Elizabeth's daughter), aged 3, born Bothwell.

His wife Janet's death record says that he was a Spirit Dealer and coalminer.

Samuel married Janet Laird, daughter of Alexander Laird and Mary Brown, on 17 Oct 1847 in Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland. (Janet Laird was born in 1807 in Bothkennar, Stirling, Scotland, christened on 13 Jul 1807 in Bothkennar, Stirling, Scotland and died on 14 May 1865 in Newarthill, Lanark, Scotland.). The cause of her death was Bronchitis, 14 days.
