bullet  General Notes:

"Thomas Semple was born at Larkhall, in the parish of Dalserf in about 1836. An Old Parish Record has not been located for his birth - presumably he was a twin of Jean (Jane) Semple. In the 1851 census, Thomas was living with his parents in Dalserf \endash he was a 14 year old Hand Loom Weaver.
Thomas married Janet Barrowman on 31st December 1856 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. Old Monkland boarders on Glasgow. Thomas was a Collier at the time of his marriage. Thomas was 20 years old when he married and his wife Janet was 18. Janet was born in Rutherglen.
By 1861, Thomas and his family had moved to Glasgow and were living at 137 West Muir St, in Barony. Thomas continued to work as a Coal Miner. They had two sons \endash John (aged 4, born in Coatbridge) and William (aged 2, born in Parkhead, Glasgow). The family was to remain in Parkhead, Glasgow for at least the next 10 years.
An additional 5 children were born by the time of the 1871 census, however one of these children did not survive. Thomas continued to work in the coal mines.
By the 1881 census, Thomas and Janet had had 12 children but 3 of them had died in childhood. Their children were \endash John (b. 1857), William Barrowman (b. 1859), Thomas Barrowman (b. 1861), Helen Goldie (b. 1863), Margaret McNair (b. 1865), Christina Barrowman (b. 1868), Peter (b. 1870), Christina Barrowman (b. 1872), Janet (b. 1874), Matthew (b. 1876), Janet Barrowman (b. 1878) and Jane Barrowman (b. 1880).
On the night of the 1881 census, all 9 children appear to be still living at home \endash with their ages ranging from 5 months old to 24 years old. Their working age daughters were either weaving or winding. One of their sons was a "Draper Salesman", and two were Carters. Their address was 21 Baird Street, Barony, Glasgow.
In 1891, the family were residing at 21 Band St, in Barony, Glasgow. Only 4 children remained at home, with the youngest (aged 10) still at school, her elder sister working in a shop, one brother working as an Iron Dresser and the other as a Carter. Thomas's profession was listed as Labourer. In 1918 when one of his daughters remarried, she listed her father's profession as being a Steel Worker.
On 25th January 1898, Thomas died from Broncho-pneumonia. He had had this for 11 days. He was 61 years old." With thanks to Sarah Semple, New Zealand.
