At the time of the 1841 Census he and Margaret were living at Carses Close in the Parish of Tranent. He was 35 and a Coal Miner, born in the County. His wife Margaret's surname is recorded as Jones. James is recorded as RODGERS. Living with them were their children William, aged 8, Alexander aged 5 and what looks like Lilley aged 2 (who was probably Margaret).

At the time of the 1851 Census they were living at East Windy Gaul (?) in Tranent. James was 56 a coal pit labourer born Tranent. Margaret was 49, born in Cockenzie. Living with them were children William, 19, unmarried, a coal miner; Alexander, 15, a farm labourer; Lilly, 11, and Janet 8 both Scholars. All the children were born in Tranent.

In 1861 they were living on the west side of Church St, Tranent. James was aged 60 and an Agricultural Labourer, born in Tranent. Margaret was 56, and son Alexander was living there. He was aged 24, single and an Agricultural Labourer too. They also had a Lodger living with them, Joseph Wright, an Agricultural Labourer aged 25 and born in London.

• He worked as a Coal miner at the time of the Census in 1841 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland.

• He worked as an Agricultural Labourer according to his wife's death certificate.

James married Margaret Jones, daughter of William Jones ** and Margaret Greig **, on 25 Nov 1825 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland. (Margaret Jones was born on 8 Oct 1803 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland, christened on 30 Oct 1803 in Cockenzie, East Lothian, Scotland and died on 19 Jul 1870 in ?? Pell, Tranent, Haddington, , East Lothian, Scotland.). The cause of her death was Chronic Bronchitis / several years.
