The NSW BDM online index records his name as Bertie H Sullivan. There is a record at FamilySearch.org which suggests his name was Joseph Bertie Hilton Sullivan.
___________________________________________________________________________

A Herbert Sullivan enlisted in the AIF on 30 June 1916 at Cootamundra. His father was William John Sullivan of Midgeon (Station), near Narrandera and his mother was Kate Sullivan. He was 18 1/2 years old at enlistment and had been born at Narrandera. I can find no record of a Herbert Sullivan being born there and then to any parents so I believe this was actually Bertie. His brother Thomas also enlisted.

He was a Single Iron worker, 5 feet 6 1/2 inches tall and weighed 140 lbs. He had a fair complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. He had the consent of both parents to join, owing to his age. His mother signed her name "Kate Sullivan".

He was given the Service number 6816 and the rank of Private and assigned to "C" Company of the 3rd Battalion. A few weeks later he was assigned to "B" Company of the 5th Battalion and on 17 November 1916 he was assigned to 22 RNS 14th Battalion and left Sydney on the Port Napier disembarking in Devonport, England on 29 January 1917. Here he joined the 4th Training Battalion at Cadford.

By the 4 April 1917 he was in France serving with the 4th ADBD (?) where he spent the remainder of the War. He was to remain in France until 29 April 1919 when he was taken back to England before returning to Australia on the Miltiades which departed Plymouth on 19 June 1919 and arrived in Australia on 5 August. He was discharged from the AIF on 13 September 1919.

Private Herbert Sullivan was the recipient of the British War Medal No. 59710 and the Victory medal No. 58068.
