In the parish register, their marriage record appears on the same page as that for John Harkess and Marion Blackie, whose daughter Margaret married a cousin (once removed) of Isabel, John Jones (who emigrated to South Australia).

At the time of the 1841 Census George and Isabel were living at the Tranent Colliery where George was working as a Coal Man and Waggoner. The surname is spelled RUSSEL. They were both aged 25 and both born in the County. They had 2 children, George aged 3 and Margaret aged 1.

In 1851 they were living in a house at the Lamerbead Pit in Tranent. The family name is spelled RUSSAL. George was 35 and a Waggon Driver. Isabel was 34, the children were named as George 13, Margaret 11 and William 7 - all scholars; and daughter Isabella Horsburg aged 4. Daughter Janet born two years earlier is not present and probably died before this time.

By 1861 they had moved to Holytown in Bothwell Parish, Lanark. They were living at 3 Stone Row, in a house with 1 room with windows. Stone Row is just to the north of Newarthill on the Legbrannock Road. George Russell was a Carter, Isabel a Carter's wife, both aged 44. Living with them were their children George, aged 23, a Carter, born Tranent; Isabella aged 14, a Scholar born Tranent; son Philip aged 8, a scholar born Tranent; son Robert Alexander aged 9 months born Bothwell.

• He worked as a Carter at the time of his son Philip's marriage to Mary Ann Wallace on 18 Oct 1875.

• He worked as a Carter according to his wife's death certificate.

George married Isabel Jones, daughter of William Jones ** and Margaret Greig **, on 16 Jan 1837 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland. (Isabel Jones was born on 14 Jul 1816 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland, christened on 21 Jul 1816 in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland and died on 15 Jan 1899 in 3 Rodney St, Edinburgh, , Midlothian, Scotland.). The cause of her death was Old Age & Debility - 4 months.
