His Birth Certificate clearly spells his name as Michal. It is Michael on his Marriage Certificate.

Michael's sister Janet, married Helen's brother John.

There is a record in the 1841 Census of a Michael Cadzow, aged 20, Iron Miner living at Fauldstone, Whitburn. He was born outside the County. Even though the age is 20, rather than 23 which he would have been this is almost certainly Michael. Michael was listed as an Iron Miner in several documents, and was married in Whitburn in 1846. Living with him at this address was Thomas Cadzow, Iron Miner aged 15. This would be his brother. Interestingly, also living at this address was one Charles Meek, also an Iron Miner aged 20. Charles Meek fathered an illegitimate son with Michael's future wife Helen Meek who appears to have also been living close by near her own family. She is on the same Census page.

At the time of the 1851 Census he was living at Mosscroft, Whitburn. He was aged 32 and an Iron Stone Mason born in Lanark, Hamilton. Living with him were his wife, Helen aged 35, a Bonnet Maker born Whitburn, Peter Meek, recorded as 'son' aged 8, a Scholar, and other children Catherine, aged 3, James aged 2, and Elizabeth aged 1.

He has signed his name on daughter Catharine's death certificate suggesting that he could write.

He emigrated to South Australia in 1864 on the Eastern Empire with his wife, 7 children, and his wife's brother William Meek. On arrival in South Australia, Helen and Michael settled and began dairying in Norwood. After several years, in 1873, they were successful in a ballot to obtain 984 acres of land at Mannmarie. Farming was difficult with water drawn by a windlass and a ten gallon bucket. His religion was Methodist.
