The 6th Regiment served with distinction on the Western Front in WW1. A citation can be equated to a "Mention in Despatches". On the 30th December 1918, Ernest was also awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur. The Order is the highest decoration in France and is divided into five various degrees of which Chevalier (or Knight) is the highest. A rare honour.
Ernest married Lucie Jolibois, daughter of Jean Édouard Jolibois and Marie Pélagie Demandre, on 14 Jun 1905 in Aulnois-sous-Vertuzey, , Lorraine, France. (Lucie Jolibois was born in 1882 and died in 1974.)
