George was born when his mother was 22 and was raised by his maternal grandmother. His mother had 4 more children by the time she and her husband emigrated to Australia on the Bendigo in 1922 with them. George was left with his granny and he came to Australia when he was 17, sponsored by the Big Brother Movement.
He went to live with his family not long after he arrived.
They lived in Granville.
