In 1880 he was living in Elmore, Faribault, Minnesota. He was aged 27 and a farmer. Living with him were his wife Iona, aged 20, born in Wisconsin, and a daughter Ellen Marion, aged 5 months, born in Minnesota.

In 1895 he was still living at Elmore. He was 43 years old and a farmer. He was recorded as having been in the State and the district for 30 years. Living with him were his wife aged 34 and three children (all identified by initials only), CM, aged 15, JS aged 13 and AA aged 10. Alexander's father, James, was also living with them, aged 73 and working as a farmer.

In 1900 he was still a farmer at Elmore. He was aged 46, could read, write and speak English. He owned his farm with no mortgage. Living here also were his wife Iona, aged 40 and children Ellen aged 20, James a farm labourer aged 18 and Amasa aged 15. All the children could read write and speak English.

In 1910 he was still living at Elmore and a Farmer. He was recorded as 58 years of age. Living here were his wife Iona M, aged 48 and son James N. aged 28, a labourer on the home farm and his Grand-daughter, James' child, Iona M, aged 3. He owned his farm, and had a Mortgage on it.

Alexander married Iona Mariah Jones Ackerman, daughter of Newton Ackerman and Ellen Jones, in 1880. (Iona Mariah Jones Ackerman was born in Jan 1860 in Wisconsin, USA, died in 1935 and was buried in 1935 in Riverview Cemetery, Elmore, Fairbault, Minnesota.)
