At the time of the 1851 census he is living at 32 Greenend, in the village of Greenend, Old Monkland. The family surname is spelled FORSYTHE. Thomas is 37, a coal miner born in Shotts. Janet is 41, also botn in Shotts. Living here also are their children: Marion, 10 a scholar; John, 7, a scholar; William 5, all born in Shotts; and Elizabeth, 18 months born in New Monkland. They also have a number of Lodgers living with them: Elizabeth Watson, Duncan Ross and Robert Adam, all born Bothwell.

At the time of the 1861 census the family is living at 23 Buttry's Row, Armadale near Bathgate in West Lothian. Thomas is 47, a coal miner, born Shotts. Janet is 51, born Shotts. Living with them are children: William, 15, a Pit Drawer, born Shotts; Isabella, 11, a scholar, born New Monkland; Thomas,8, a scholar, born Old Monkland. Also living here is an Alexander Forsyth, a Lodger aged 30, ironstone miner, born Dunfermline, Fifeshire (perhaps related?) and Thomas Dyart, 33, also an ironstone miner from Aberdour, Fife.
