John and Mary were both residents of Carnbrae at the time of their marriage. This is where her father worked as a gardener.

At the time of the 1871 census they were living at the No. 1 Pit House (obviously at a colliery) in Old Monkland, Lanark. John was a 40 year old Pit oversman, born Old Monkland. Mary was 34, born Bothwell. Living here were children, James, 13; William, 10, a scholar; Mary,8 and Agnes, 6 both scholars; Janet, 3 and Joseph 1 month. Also living with them was James Park, John's nephew, unmarried, 20 a miner, born Ayrshire.

John married Mary Cullen, daughter of James Cullen and Mary Hardie, on 31 Dec 1855 in Carnbrae Cottage, Bothwell, , Lanark, Scotland. (Mary Cullen was born on 29 May 1837 in Carnbrae Cottage, Bothwell, , Lanark, Scotland and died on 2 Aug 1921 in Coatbridge, Lanark, Scotland.). The cause of her death was Cerebral Haemorrhage, 14 days.
