bullet  General Notes:

On his Birth Record his name is recorded simply as George Gouldthorpe. In documents from his adult years he is recorded as George Edward.

According to his Shipping Record his religion was Church of England and he could read and write.

George's death was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday 27 February, 1915 as follows:

GOULDTHORP February 19, at his son's residence, Cowper Street, Granville, George Gouldthorp, dearly beloved husband of Honora Gouldthorp, aged 76 years. Peace, perfect peace.

A more detailed Obituary appeared in what was probably the local paper in Granville:

DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT
__________

On Friday last at 9.40 pm, Granville lost one of its old and respected residents in the person of Mr George Gouldthorpe, who for the past 28 years had resided in the district. For some time he had been suffering from an internal trouble, which terminated in his death at the age of 76 years. He leaves a widow and eight children, thre sons viz., George Edward Gouldthorpe, of Stuart Street, Park Hill; Benjamin Gouldthorpe, who is in West Australia; and Frederick Charles Gouldthorpe, who is so well known in our town, and is first class coachman in the local fire brigade - his five daughters being Mrs Weston (Florrie) and Mrs Richards (Nellie), both in W.A., Mrs Nelson (Elizabeth) of Concord, Mrs Quinton (Annie) of Lewisham, and Mrs Porter (Ada) of Campsie. The death took place at his son's (Mr Fred C. Gouldthorpe) residence, Cowper Street, Granville. On Sunday afternoon, February 21st, a very impressive service was held in the house conducted by Rev. Hugh Wilson. The deceased, who was a native of Cullen, England [NB actually Colerne] had for many years been employed at the Clyde Works as a carpenter and joiner, and while there was connected with the local fire brigade, holding the position of captain for several years. The funeral which left his son's residence on Sunday for Rookwood Cemetery, was very largely attended by the townspeople and friends the members of the Lord Clyde Protestant Alliance Lodge being largely in attendance, the officers acting as pall bearers. Special wreaths were sent from the members of the local fire brigade and Lord Clyde P.A. Lodge also many others from the numerous friends. Special mention is desired by his respected widow and children of the skill and careful attention given to their late husband and father by Dr Sheldon, who was in constant attendance. If deceased had lived until May next he would have celebrated his golden wedding.
_______________

He is buried with his wife in Rookwood old CofE - Section T Row 35 Grave # 10143. The plot is occupied by very large shrubs which completely obscured the headstone (February 2011). The Monumental Inscription reads:

[Left Hand Side] MY DEAR HUSBAND / GEORGE GOULDTHORP / Who Passed Away / 19th February 1915 / At Cowper Street / Granville / Aged 76 Years / At Rest / Erected By / His Loving Wife / Nora Gouldthorp

[Right Hand Side] OUR DEAR MOTHER / NORA GOULDTHORP / Who Passed Away / 6th July 1927 / At Cowper Street / Granville / Aged 81 Years / Re-united

His death certificate records that 1 son and 2 daughters had pre-deceased him out of 11 children. I can find no record of the birth or death of the son, and his wife's death certificate only records that 2 daughters pre-deceased her, out of a total of 10 children. I think the reference to a deceased son on George's death certificate is a mistake.
