No father is listed on his Birth Certificate, with the section being struck out by the Registrar. Julia is recorded as his mother, under her maiden name O'Sullivan. She was aged just 14 years. The section pertaining to Marriage has been struck out by the Registrar. Edward was almost certainly fathered by Julia's brother-in-law, William Boyd, who allegedly sexually assaulted her at age 14. William was married to Julia's sister, Johanna. Refer to notes against William Boyd, including newspaper reports of Julia's parents attempting to recover child maintenance from Boyd. Boyd was subsequently imprisoned for other offences.

According to Edward's death certificate he came to Victoria from NSW at about age 21, in 1902.
