According to the 1914 Electoral Roll he was living with his brother, Edward and Edward's wife Annie, at 39 Blackwood St, Yarraville, Victoria. His occupation was listed as Labourer.

By 1915 he was working as a Butcher at Corowa, New South Wales according to the Sands Directory. When he married in 1919 he was a Labourer residing in Oaklands, New South Wales.

James was share farming in Henty and moved to Temora in 1928 with his family to occupy the farm that he named "Blackwood".

In the 1943 Electoral Roll he is recorded as a Farmer residing at Blackwood, Temora. Living here also were his daughter Julia Margaret, a Hospital Nurse and his wife Mary, Home Duties.
In the 1949 Electoral Roll James is still a farmer at Blackwood, Temora. Julia and Mary are still living there with the same occupations and so is son, Maurice a farm hand.
