General Notes:
The story of the Cadzows and their arrival in Australia is recounted in Craig's book - In the Shadow of Feathertop A History of the Lives and Legacy of George Jones and Margaret Hardie . Read about it here: http://craig-fullerton.com/in-the-shadow-of-feathertop/ _________________________________________________
His birth record at Scotlandspeople can be found under the surname CADZOU as this is how it appears in the record. However, this is just careless or indistinct handwriting as the father's name is clearly spelled CADZOW in the same entry. I have not been able to find a record of his death in either Scotland or Victoria, Australia.
It is possible that he did come to Australia. His sister-in-law mentions that "Thomas left for Simpsons diggings....but I think he is farther up country as he has never wrote back yet" This was in the context of talking about William and John Cadzow. Later, in Dec 1855 William mentions in a letter that Thomas had been to see their mother in Brunswick.
A Thomas Cadzow arrived in Melbourne as an Unassisted Immigrant in August 1853 aboard the Reaper but he was aged 23, when our Thomas would have been 28. However, ages were often wrong on the shipping records. This Thomas was a Miner by occupation, and he had boarded the ship at Glasgow. Adding weight to the view that this was our Thomas is that on board also were a number of members of the Staley family. The Staley's were also from Whitburn, and the Cadzows and the Staleys knew each other and lived on the Forest Creek goldfields together. The Staleys were Thomas, 31 and Mrs Staley, 30 and children Jonathon, 10 Mary, 7 Elizabeth, 5 Jane, 3 and Robert, 2.
