It is possible he arrived into Victoria as an Unassisted Immigrant in July 1888 aboard the Iberia, aged 20.

Hugh is buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery, along with his wife Bridget. RC Section AA, Grave 86. The Memorial Inscription reads:

In Loving Memory / of / HUGH / Loved Husband of / BRIDGET LEONARD / Died 28 June 1923 / Aged 57 Years / Also the Above / BRIDGET LEONARD / Died 30th May 1948 ? Aged 86 Years / R.I.P

The cause of her death was Broncho-pneumonia, 7 days.
