bullet  General Notes:

At the time of the 1841 Census he was living in Cockenzie with his wife Janet, they were both aged 25 and both were born in the County. John was a Fisherman.

I have not been able to locate birth records for any children born to John and Janet. However, there is a death record for a John Jones who died at 2 months of age. The child was described as "Jones John fisher in Cockenzie natural son" so may have actually been unnamed. This John Jones, fisherman in Cockenzie, and married in 1836 is the only logical father.

At the time of the 1851 Census John and Janet were living at 14 Buck Lane in Cockenzie. Janet is recorded as Janet Donaldson (as other wives are on the page too). John is 34 and a fisherman, Janet is aged 39. No children are living with them, but there is a Catherine Donaldson, Janet's sister, aged 18, an unmarried House Servant.

At the time of the 1861 Census John & Janet were living in "Street of Village" in Cockenzie. John was aged 45 and a Fisherman, Janet aged 43, both born in Tranent. Their house had 2 rooms with windows. Living nearby is a George Donaldson and a Peter Harkess and their families who may have been related to Janet as these are her parents surnames also (but very common in Cockenzie).

At the time of the 1871 Census he was living at Newhouse, Aberlady, East Lothian. He was a Fisherman aged 54, born in Tranent. Living here also were his wife, Janet, aged 57, born Tranent and their niece, Janet Donaldson, a Domestic Servant aged 22, born in Tranent. Her parents were Adam Donaldson (Janet's brother) and Ann Stewart.

At the time of the 1881 Census John was living at 139 South Door (?) Cockenzie. He was aged 66 and a Fisherman. Living with his was his wife Jane, 69, a Fisherman's wife and their niece Janet Donaldson, aged 31 and unmarried. All three born in Cockenzie. Living next door at 140 is a Jane Donaldson, 68, widow and a Pauper. There is another Donaldson 2 doors away at No. 137 on the other side, Elizabeth aged 74, also a Widowed pauper living with her grandaughter Elizabeth Marshall aged 12. And a James Donaldson and his 3 children at No. 142. James is 67 and a fisherman.

In 1891 John Jones is living by himself, still at South Doors, Cockenzie. He is 75, Widowed and a Retired Fisherman. James Donaldson, also a retired fisherman aged 77, is living next door with two of his unmarried daughters Maggie, 47 and Isabelle, 40.

John is believed to be the last descendant of John and Agnes Jones, still bearing the Jones surname, to have lived in Cockenzie.

His wife Janet was recorded as "(married to John Jones formerly a fisherman) Pauper" on her death certificate, 7 years before John died. He died in the Inveresk Combination Poorhouse and was described as a Fisherman. The informant on his death certificate was George Johnston, Nephew of Cockenzie.
