  General Notes:

John's sister, Helen, married Janet's brother Michael.

At the time of the 1871 Census John and his family were living at Fauldhouse in Whitburn. He was aged 50, a Miner born in Whitburn. Living with him were his wife Janet, also aged 50, son John aged 16, a miner born Whitburn; son, William aged 15, a miner born Whitburn; daughter Ann, aged 13, a Scholar; son Peter age 7, a Scholar; son James age 2, and James Cadzow (Janet's brother) a lodger, unmarried, aged 53 and a Labourer.

I have not found a record for the family in the 1881 Census. There is a possibility they emigrated to NZ. There are records of a Janet who died 27 January 1902 Milton, Otago and John died 7 September 1894 Milton, Otago. Family letters written in 1858 say they were looking to emigrate to Australia, so it's possible they went to NZ instead.

• He worked as a Coalminer at the time of daughter Catherine's death on 9 Jul 1868 in Whitburn, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland.

• He worked as an Iron Miner at the time of Elizabeth's marriage on 25 Aug 1870.

• He worked as a Miner at the time of the Census in 1871 in Whitburn, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland.

• He resided at the time of the Census in 1841 in Fauldstone, Whitburn, , West Lothian, Scotland.

• He resided at the time of the Census in 1871 in Fauldhouse, Whitburn, West Lothian, Scotland.

John married Janet Cadzo, daughter of James Cadzow ** and Elisabeth Cowie **, on 18 Dec 1848 in Whitburn, Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland. (Janet Cadzo was born on 23 Feb 1821 in Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland, christened on 16 Mar 1821 in Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland and died on 27 Jan 1902 in Milton, Otago, New Zealand.)
