John Old
General Notes: John Old was the third son of Richard Old & Jane Liddicoat. He was christened on the 3rd July, 1821 in St Mawgan in Pydar, Cornwall, UK. John was married at the Te Henui Chapel, New Plymouth to Mary Jane Knuckey, whom he m et on the Essex. They were married by the Rev William Bolland and witnessed by Maria Wills and Robert Old, on the 15th February, 1845. John and Mary Jane lived in New Plymouth in a cottage owned by Richard Knuckey in 184 6. Richard Knuckey was a brother of Mary Jane Knuckey's father, Nicholas K nuckey. The family lived in Wanganui from 1860. They farmed in Fordell - L ot 227, Denlair (210 acres) Mary Jane Old died on the 4th March, 1887 ag ed 59 years, and John Old lived to his 75th year, dying on the 1st May, 18 96. Died at his son-in-law's house (Frank Kurth), Fordell. Both John and M ary Jane Old are buried at St John's Churchyard, Matarawa Cemetery, Wangan ui, along with two of their daughters, Mary Ann in 1866 and Margaret in 18 72. On one occasion a Maori said that John Old's dog had been worrying h is pigs. He knew the dog but not the owner. When ownership was denied, John and the Maori walked for about two hours shoulder to shoulder, the Mao ri ready with his mere to kill the pakeha if the dog came up and showed fr iendliness. Fortunately the dog didn't come near. (Mary Jane Knuckey was born on 1 Nov 1828 in Camborne, Cornwall, England, christened on 11 Nov 1828 in Camborne, Cornwall, England, died on 4 Mar 1887 in Matarawa, Fordell, Wanganui, New Zealand and was buried circa 8 Mar 1887 in St Johns Churchyard, Matarawa Cem, Wanganui, New Zealand.) Noted events in their marriage were: • Single: Te Henui Chapel, Te Henui, New Plymouth, New Zealand, 15 Feb 1845. • Marriage Bann: By the Publication of Banns in Te Henui Chapel, Te Henui, New Plymouth, New Zealand, by William Bollard in the presence of Maria William Wills and Robert Old - all made their marks, 15 Feb 1845. • Friends: met on the Essex en route to New Zealand, Between 3 Sep 1842 and 20 Jan 1843. • They signed a marriage contract maaried by the Rev William Bolland and witnessed by Maria Wills and Robert Old. |
