bullet  General Notes:

His Birth Certificate states name as Henry (pretty sure of this), and he signed his wedding certificate as this, but seems to have been known as Harry.

He was a miner at the Mons Meg mine in 1893 It appears that he was the claimholder at the Cyanide Plant Reef in 1908 getting 52 ounces of gold from a crush of 90 tonnes of quartz. He was recorded as a miner in Harrietville in the 1903 & 1909 Census.

Harry Lawrence was recruited with 11 other Harrietville miners to go to what was then Rhodesia in 1902 to supervise local workers at a mine 600 miles north of Bulaweyo. He died in Africa in 1915. Another colleague was killed by a leopard, the rest all returned home. It is possible that he died in Selukwe, now called Shurugwi, about 200km north east of Bulaweyo and 350km south of Harare. This town is referred to in a Death Notice for Harry's son, Cyril, where Harry is referred to as the late Harry Lawrence, Selukwe, and Mary of 20 Staley St, Brunswick. Selukwe was established in 1899 by the British South Africa Company and remains an important gold, nickel and chrome mining centre to this day.

Henry married Mary Jones, daughter of George Jones ** and Margaret Hardie **, on 1 Jun 1895 in Moor St, Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. (Mary Jones was born on 12 May 1869 in Hit or Miss, Harrietville, Victoria, Australia, died on 2 Jul 1954 in 7 Collace St, Brunswick, Victoria, Australia and was buried on 5 Jul 1954 in Cremated At Fawkner Cemetery - Remains Scattered.). The cause of her death was Cerebral Haemorrhage, 8 days / Atherosclerosis, years.

bullet  Marriage Notes:

It was a Victorian Free Church ceremony. Witnesses were C.F. Lee and Lydia Kinsaman. The Officiating Minister was Nathaniel Kinsman, so Lydia may have been his wife or sister.

At the time of the wedding Mary was about 6 months pregnant with Cyril which may explain why the wedding was in Melbourne, with no family members as witnesses, and not at a Wesleyan or Methodist church.
